Walks and hikes

The route offers a pleasant mix of sand and stone. The discreet sandy path along the Creuse leads to a stony path that climbs through the undergrowth. At the top, the village stands out amidst verdant surroundings once planted with vines.

The Brenne landscape is marked by lakes and an unspoilt network of hedgerows growing along paths and meadows. These hedges of varying heights sometimes reveal views of the ponds and sometimes line the paths leading to them.

Ruffec, a town on the banks of the Creuse, offers a surprising wealth of things to see inlcuding Jachère wood through which the Saint-Victor stream flows, and the outlet of the Les Grandes Fourdines lake which can be admired from the embankment.

Here, the land and houses are red. Iron has been a source of wealth for the the village of Chéniers. Galleries, holes filled with water, wagons and huts are the remaining signs of the exploitation of the ore which dates back to Roman times. Set out to discover this mining past.

The Saint John spring is said to have had healing properties since Roman times. Taste a drop before setting off along the shady paths. This circuit mainly passes through woodland which seems to protect the pretty village of Saint-Aigny and its treasure with its verdant setting.

This hilly and bucolic tour, in the heart of the countryside of the Abloux Valley, offers beautiful views of St-Civran. It follows sunken paths and crosses the Abloux twice. Until 1997, this unspoilt river drove a mill whose buildings and feed canal still remain.

Sainte-Gemme is characterized by its sandy soils that are ideal for growing asparagus and allow you to walk on dry land at all times. This largely shaded route leads to the Oince lake. A small loop bordered by flowers leading to the Saint-Martin dolmen.

Saint-Gaultier lies between the Creuse and the Coteau. The route follows the Green Lane, travels along the river and then crosses it over a viaduct. The higher sections offer remarkable views of the valley and the path along the banks of the Creuse offers a sense of tranquillity.

This circuit, marked out with information panels, is an invitation to discover the historic center of Saint-Gaultier. Discover the banks of the Creuse with the mill, the ramparts, the Romanesque church and the seminary that became a college.

The itinerary leaves La Benaize and the pretty village of Saint-Hilaire to go to Anglin. Here, the path makes its way between the river and the limestone cliffs offering shelter beneath their rocks. Châteaux are a reminder of the Hundred Years' War and the strategic position of the town.

This itinerary, partly wooded, reflects Brenne as it was in the past and is today, with the 7th-century abbey of St-Cyran which has shaped the landscape and tamed the wild nature of Brenne which can be discovered from the Sous observatory in the Cherine Reserve.

In the woods, a combination of narrow and broad sandy paths lead you to the Vieux lake and and the marsh of Ozance. These sites are an invitation to daydream... Little known but of great landscape interest, they are true gems of Brenne's natural heritage.
