The lakes
in Brenne are, for the most part, private. We provide the following
information in order that the visitor may better observe and understand
their wildlife.

Outings guided by naturalists (including visits for 6 to 15 year olds) are organized throughout the year, some even in English. Ask for a free calendar. |

Here the natural fauna of the area can be observed without being disturbed. Chérine National Nature Reserve - Saint-Michel-en-Brenne Chérine National Nature Reserve (145 ha) was created in order to protect less common animals and plants. Bittern, Little Bittern, Black Tern, Great Reed Warbler amongst many others can be found, as well as the small European Pond Tortoise or plants such as the Water Violet and several species of orchids. It has one of the last extensive reedbeds remaining in Brenne. |

Etangs Foucault - Rosnay Owned by the Parc Naturel Régional de la Brenne, this site is home to 36 species of rare plants and many species of aquatic bird (ducks, waders, Osprey, grebes, herons, egrets ...). A hide is open to the public, wheel chair access. |

Etang de Bellebouche - Mézières-en-Brenne One of the largest and most attractive lakes in Brenne (100 ha). Known primarily for its beach and swimming, it is also a site for natural history observation. Its reedbed and the surrounding heaths and woodland make for a great diversity of wildlife. Hides open to the public, guided visits.

Etang Massé - Rosnay A "Réserve de Chasse" (no-hunting reserve) with one of the few remaining large reedbeds of Brenne ; an abundant wildlife includes Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Purple Heron, Savi's Warbler, European Pond Tortoise and a large heronry. Hide open to the public, guided visits. Etang Neuf (Plessis estate) - Migné Another Réserve de Chasse (no-hunting reserve) accessible via the Etang Mouton. Hide open to the public. |

Within some of the most picturesque landscapes of Brenne, the Beauregard (Saint-Michel-en-Brenne) and Blizon (Rosnay) nature trails mix walking with leaning thanks to the presence of interesting information boards along the length of the trails. They provide information on the wildlife and landscape. |

Certain public footpaths, open to all, pass along the embankments of one or more private lakes. Walking them is a good way of seeing some of the more beautiful lakes of the Brenne. Good examples are : the Etang de la Mer Rouge (between Rosnay and Douadic) or the Etang du Sault (near the D15, north of Rosnay). |

Hiking circuits passing
by lakes Several marked circuits allow the walker to discover private
lakes that are otherwise inaccessible. One of these walks is described
in the last part of this guide, the others are given on plastic covered
cards, one for each parish(commune).
